One of the main purposes of the Rockland Municipal Planning Federation is to promote the exchange of information, education, and training on planning and zoning methods and techniques. The Federation has been providing many training opportunities since its inception on topics related to planning, zoning, and land use including:

  • Historic Preservation
  • Environmental Issues (wetlands, steep slopes)
  • Stormwater Management
  • State Environmental Quality Review Act
  • Water Resources
  • Geographic Information Systems
  • Demographics
  • Green Infrastructure and Development
  • Transportation and Economic Development

In addition to these educational opportunities, the Rockland Municipal Planning Federation also sponsors an annual dinner, usually held in March, and a keynote speaker presents on a topic that has countywide significance.

As of January 2007, New York State requires that all planning and zoning board of appeals members must attend four hours of educational seminars per year that are related to planning, zoning, and land use issues. The educational sessions offered by the Federation help these board members attain their required training hours. The educational sessions are always held in Rockland County, and are free to all who attend.
