Epidemiology

Epidemiology is the study and analysis of the distribution, patterns, and determinants of health and disease conditions in a defined population.

The health department study's the patterns of health behaviors and illness at the population level to prevent negative health outcomes for Rockland residents by:

monitoring the trends of communicable and chronic diseases in the county;
collecting community-wide health surveillance data with a special emphasis on schools, hospitals and other congregate settings;
investigating disease outbreaks and recommending strategies to minimize illness; and
supporting joint health improvement efforts across county departments, community-based organizations, service providers, and other engaged agencies.

Rockland County Community Health Assessment 2025-2030 provides a local look at factors that affect the health of Rockland residents. This document includes findings from local, state and national sources.

Rockland County Mid-Hudson Community Health Assessment Executive Summary 2025 provides a brief overview of the process and major findings of 2025 Mid-Hudson Region Community Health Assessment.

Mid-Hudson Region Community Health Assessment 2025 was developed in collaboration with the local hospitals (Good Samaritan Hospital & Montefiore Nyack Hospital) and with the other six Mid-Hudson counties (Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Sullivan, Ulster, Westchester) as part of a new regional approach to identifying and addressing broad health concerns.

Community Engagement

The health department works collaboratively with and through groups of people affiliated by geographic proximity, special interest, or similar situations to address issues affecting the well-being of those people.
