Daylight Saving Time Ends on Sunday, November 2nd

Change clocks, check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and drive carefully

NEW CITY, NY, - The Rockland County Department of Health reminds residents that daylight saving time will end at 2:00 a.m. on Sunday, November 2. This is when the clocks "fall back" and we gain an extra hour. If your clocks don’t automatically adjust for daylight saving time, remember to set them back one hour before going to sleep on Saturday night.

In addition to changing your clocks, this is a great opportunity to test your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to ensure they are in good working order and are not expired.

The Health Department's Healthy Neighborhoods Program can assist low-income residents, seniors, and at-risk families with replacing smoke and carbon monoxide alarms or changing the batteries where needed, at no charge, as supplies last. For more information, call (845) 364-3290 or visit the Healthy Neighborhoods Program website.

Keep in mind that after the time change, it will be darker earlier in the evening, so use extra caution on the roadways. Reduced visibility can make it challenging for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists to see one another. Residents are encouraged to follow these safety recommendations:

  • Wear reflective or brightly colored clothing when walking or cycling, especially during low-light hours.
  • Use lights - cyclists should equip their bikes with a white front light and a red rear light or reflector.
  • Stay alert and avoid distractions such as phones or headphones.
  • Slow down in neighborhoods, school zones, and areas with increased pedestrian activity.

Also, it may take a few days to adjust to the new daylight schedule, resulting in feeling more tired than usual as it gets darker earlier. For more information on safety tips, visit the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee website.
