Rockland Department of Health Reminds Residents of Safety Tips for a Safe and Fun Halloween!
NEW CITY, NY, - As Halloween approaches, the Rockland County Department of Health reminds families to prioritize safety while enjoying this festive time of year.
Halloween is a favorite holiday for many, filled with costumes, candy, and community fun. But it also brings increased risks, especially for children. According to Safe Kids Worldwide™, children are more than twice as likely to be struck and killed by a car on Halloween than on any other day of the year.
“While dressing up and going trick-or-treating is fun, there are risks. By planning ahead and talking with children about safe walking and visibility, we can help ensure a fun, safe night for everyone,” said Dr. Mary Leahy, Rockland County Commissioner of Health.
Here are a few Halloween safety tips:
For Safe Trick-or-Treating:
- Stay visible: Carry flashlights or glow sticks and use reflective tape on costumes and treat bags.
- Wear light colors: Bright or light-colored costumes are easier for drivers to see in low light.
- Use sidewalks: Stick to sidewalks when available. If none are present, walk on the left side of the road facing traffic.
- Cross safely: Always cross at crosswalks or intersections—never dart out from between parked vehicles.
- Look both ways: Before crossing, look left, right, then left again. Make eye contact with drivers.
- Minimize distractions: Avoid using phones or earbuds while walking, especially near roadways.
- Stay in groups: Children should travel in groups with a trusted adult or caregiver. Visit only well-lit homes and never enter a stranger’s house or vehicle.
- Review pedestrian rules: Go over basic traffic and walking safety with kids before heading out.
For Drivers:
- Slow down in residential areas, especially during peak trick-or-treating hours.
- Stay alert: Watch for children at intersections, on curbs, and near parked cars.
- Turn on headlights early to improve visibility.
- Avoid distractions: Put your phone away and focus entirely on the road.
