Residents & Businesses Urged to Reduce Water Usage Amid Stage I Drought

Rainfall Significantly Below Average Statewide

New City, NY –
The County of Rockland urges families and businesses to reduce water usage in light of a Drought Watch issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation for most of New York State.

Despite the rainfall in the forecast, the precipitation during the months of August and September has been significantly below average. This is contributing to low streamflow in the Ramapo River and a Stage I Drought trigger in Rockland, & voluntary water conservation measures are strongly recommended.

The following water conservation practices are highly encouraged:

  • Avoid any/all unnecessary outdoor water usage.
  • Reuse water collected in rain barrels, dehumidifiers or air conditioners to water plants.
  • Reduce lawnmowing as longer grass needs less water.
  • Avoid hosing down sidewalks or driveways.
  • Take short showers; fill bathtubs halfway.
  • Fix leaking pipes, hoses and faucets.
  • Purchase EPA WaterSense and Energy Star certified efficient plumbing and landscaping fixtures to reduce water use.

For additional suggestions on conserving water, visit the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation.

The dry conditions have also triggered a temporary statewide burn ban issued on October 2nd.  The statewide burn ban prohibits outdoor fires for campfires and open fires for cooking. Burning garbage or leaves is already prohibited year-round in New York State and several municipalities have burn bans currently in effect.
