Schedule Your Child’s Back-to-School Check-Up and Vaccinations Today

NEW CITY, NY, - Summer may still be in full swing, but now is the perfect time to schedule your child’s annual check-up and ensure they are up-to-date on their vaccinations before the new school year begins.

Vaccines are one of the safest and most effective ways to protect your child, and your community, from a wide range of serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses. They protect you by preparing your immune system to recognize and fight serious, and sometimes deadly, diseases.

"When you are vaccinated, it not only safeguards your own health but also serves as a shield for those who are unable to receive vaccines due to age or medical reasons," emphasized Dr. Mary Leahy, the Rockland County Commissioner of Health. "Through the concept of community or herd immunity, we collectively protect our most vulnerable members. Upholding high vaccination rates is crucial in preventing the resurgence of diseases that pose significant risks to public health."

Children attending day care or Pre-K through 12th grade in New York State (NYS) must receive all required vaccinations to attend or remain in school, unless they have a valid medical exemption. This rule applies to all public and private schools. There are no nonmedical exemptions to school vaccine requirements in NYS. For optimal health, follow the recommended vaccine schedule.

Where to get your child vaccinated:

  • Contact your child’s pediatrician to schedule their annual wellness visit and ensure they are on track with vaccinations.
  • The Rockland County Department of Health’s (RCDOH) Child Immunization Clinic provides immunizations for children and teens enrolled in elementary through high school. The RCDOH offers vaccinations for children at no cost. To make an appointment in Pomona or Spring Valley, call 845-364-2520.

For brochures, information, or to ask vaccine-related questions, stop by the RCDOH table at the 2025 National Night Out at Clover Stadium on Thursday, August 14th, from 3:00 - 6:30 pm.  For more information about vaccines, visit the NYS Department of Health.
