Three Confirmed Measles Cases in Orange County

NEW CITY, NY, - The New York State Department of Health has recently confirmed three measles cases in Orange County, New York in unvaccinated children under the age of 5 who were exposed to the virus during international travel. There are currently no reported cases in Rockland to date.

The Rockland County Department of Health urges residents to be cautious with traveling, as measles activity continues to increase both globally and within the U.S. If you must travel, consult your healthcare provider to ensure you and your family are current on your Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccinations to stay protected. The measles vaccine is safe and effective, with two doses of the MMR vaccine providing 97% protection.

Measles can be dangerous, especially for babies and young children, as it can lead to pneumonia, brain damage, deafness, and death. Others who are at high risk for complications if they get the measles include pregnant women who are not immune, as well as those who are immunocompromised or immunosuppressed (when your body can’t fight disease). About one out of four people who get measles is hospitalized.

Symptoms include a fever, rash, cough, conjunctivitis (red watery eyes), or runny nose. People are considered infectious from four days before to four days after the appearance of the rash. Symptoms usually appear 10-12 days after exposure but may appear as early as 7 days and as late as 21 days after exposure.
