How Healthy is Rockland County?
Annual County Health Rankings Report Released

NEW CITY, NY, - The annual County Health Rankings & Roadmaps, a program of the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute, were released Wednesday. This report compares each county to others nationwide. According to the report Rockland County is performing above the national average in population health and well-being, and in line with the national average for community conditions.
Population health involves both the length and quality of life, focusing on optimal physical, mental, spiritual, and social well-being.
Community conditions include the social and economic factors, physical environment, and health infrastructure in which people are born, live, learn, work, play, worship, and age. These factors are also referred to as the social determinants of health.
“This report highlights the areas in which we are doing well but with help from our partnerships with state and federal agencies, local community and faith organizations, healthcare providers, schools, worksites, and municipalities, we are always working hard to improve our health outcomes," said Dr. Mary Leahy, Rockland County Commissioner of Health.
The Health Department plays a crucial role in protecting and improving the health of the community by focusing on:
- monitoring and preventing the spread of infectious diseases and providing vaccination programs to reduce health risks.
- offering programs and campaigns to educate the public about healthy lifestyles, nutrition, exercise, smoking cessation, and preventive care.
- ensuring that the environment is safe.
- safeguarding housing for renters, seniors, and low-income residents.
- responding to health emergencies and preparing the community with disaster response plans and resources.
- promoting programs that prevent or manage chronic conditions through education, screenings, and support services.
- offering various health services, such as immunization, family planning, tuberculosis clinics, maternal and child health programs, and services for vulnerable populations and people with disabilities.
- working with lawmakers to influence policies that improve public health.
"The future of public health is in our hands—it thrives when we take action and responsibility. I urge every resident to prioritize their health and work together to build a stronger, healthier community," said County Executive Ed Day.
