StoryWalk® Project Opens in Village of West Haverstraw

NEW CITY, NY, - The Rockland County Department of Health invites the public to a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the latest StoryWalk® Project installation at Peck’s Pond.
When: Friday, November 1st @ 1:00 pm
Where: Peck’s Pond located at 130 Samsondale Avenue, West Haverstraw
(at the far end of the parking lot off Railroad Avenue/Beach Road)
StoryWalk® projects combine nature, reading, and movement by featuring a family-friendly story on posts around an outdoor path of a park and is being done in collaboration with the Village of West Haverstraw and Haverstraw King’s Daughters Library.
The first book at Peck’s Pond titled Jump Frog Jump! ¡Salta, Ranita, Salta! by Robert Kalan is available in English and Spanish.
Park visitors will enjoy page after page as they walk the loop path around the pond, now adding to the many amenities offered at the ADA- accessible park. The StoryWalk® book will then be updated seasonally to engage residents year-round.
“The village encourages residents to visit this beautiful multipurpose park with its new StoryWalk®. The StoryWalk® Project is free and accessible during normal park hours. We remain committed to increasing opportunities for physical activity around the community,” said Laura Zitofsky, Village of Haverstraw Deputy Clerk.
“The library is looking forward to sustaining StoryWalk® Projects by continuing to collaborate with the village to promote literacy, reading, health, exercise, and movement in North Rockland,” said Frank Erlanger, Haverstraw King's Daughters Public Library Aide.
“Spend some time with family, put on your walking shoes, roller skates, or bring your bicycle, and come enjoy the StoryWalk® Project at this great park,” said Kevin McKay, Interim Deputy Commissioner of Health.
Visit the Haverstraw King’s Daughters Public Library Children’s Services Special Events page to learn more about StoryWalk® and the wide range of library services available. You can also visit another StoryWalk® located at Emeline Park in the Village of Haverstraw.
The project was funded with support from the New York State Department of Health’s Creating Healthy Schools and Communities Program. StoryWalk® was created by Anne Ferguson and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library in Montpelier, Vermont. StoryWalk® is a registered service mark owned by the Kellogg-Hubbard Library.
