Rockland County Department of Health Reminds Residents to Get Tested for HIV
NEW CITY, NY – In recognition of National HIV Testing Day, the Rockland County Department of Health (RCDOH) is encouraging residents to get tested for HIV. Knowing your HIV status can help you stay healthy and protect others. One in eight people living with HIV don’t know they are infected.
National HIV Testing Day (NHTD) is observed on June 27th. This day highlights the importance of HIV testing to know your HIV status. Knowing your HIV status can help you get the care, treatment, and support you need, regardless of the test results.
HIV may not cause symptoms at first, meaning you can be infected and still feel healthy. If you are HIV-negative, you can take advantage of HIV prevention tools; if you’re HIV-positive, treatment can keep you healthy and reduce the risk of transmission to others. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, knowing your status can help protect your baby from infection.
The RCDOH Sexual Health Clinic provides free and confidential testing for sexually transmitted infections, including HIV. Testing is available by appointment only on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. To make an appointment, call (845) 364-3771.
“National HIV Testing Day highlights how important it is to know your HIV status,” said Dr. Mary Leahy, Rockland County Commissioner of Health. “Testing helps people get treatment early, reduces stigma, and prevents the spread of HIV. With proper treatment, people living with HIV can live long and healthy lives.”
