Free Mosquito Control Supplies for Rockland Residents
NEW CITY, NY – The Rockland County Department of Health (RCDOH) is encouraging residents to help reduce mosquito populations this season to prevent mosquito-borne illnesses. RCDOH will provide free Mosquito Dunks® and fathead minnows to Rockland County residents.
Mosquito Dunks® are small, donut-shaped products that float on standing water and release bacteria that eliminates mosquito larvae before they develop into biting adults. Residents can use these Mosquito Dunks® in closed or unused private swimming pools and hot tubs.
Dunks are available by appointment only for pickup at the Robert L. Yeager Health Complex in Pomona. To place an order, call 845-364-3173 or email wnv@co.rockland.ny.us. Residents must complete and bring a “Mosquito Dunk Order Form” to their scheduled pick-up time. Visit the Mosquito Control Program webpage for more information.
Fathead minnows are small fish that eat mosquito larvae – each one can eat up to 200 larvae per day. They can be placed in unused swimming pools, ornamental ponds, or other water sources with at least eight inches of standing water.
The RCDOH will hold a one-day giveaway of live fathead minnows for residents on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, from 4:30-6:00 pm, at 50 Sanatorium Road, Pomona. There will be signs posted along Sanatorium Road to direct you to the location of the giveaway. Permitting only allows minnows to be released in Rockland County. You can reserve your minnows online, or by calling 845-364-3173. Please check the Mosquito Control Program webpage for updates about the minnow giveaway.
"We encourage all residents to take advantage of these free mosquito control products to help reduce the mosquito population in our community. Mosquito control starts in your own backyard. Check your property often for anything that can hold water, and empty or remove those items at least once a week," said Dr. Mary Leahy, Rockland County Commissioner of Health.
