Step Into Better Health This American Heart Month

NEW CITY, NY – In recognition of American Heart Month this February, the Rockland County Department of Health encourages residents to take small steps toward better heart health by making walking part of their daily routine.

The American Heart Association reports that walking at a brisk pace for at least 150 minutes each week offers many health benefits, including:

  • Improved thinking, mood, and sleep
  • Lower risk of serious health conditions like heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and certain cancers
  • Better control of blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol
  • Increased energy and endurance
  • Improved mental and emotional well-being and reduced risk of depression
  • Improved memory and lowered risk of dementia
  • Stronger bones and reduced risk of osteoporosis
  • Support for maintaining a healthy weight

Walking is an easy and effective way to support both physical and mental well-being. Stay alert near traffic to reduce the risk of injury. Community members are encouraged to:

  • Use sidewalks and crosswalks whenever available.
  • Follow traffic signals and cross streets at intersections.
  • Make eye contact with drivers before crossing.
  • Wear bright or reflective clothing, especially during early morning or evening hours.
  • Avoid distractions, such as mobile phones, while walking near traffic.

The Rockland County Department of Health’s Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee program educates the community on important traffic safety measures for pedestrians. To schedule a free, interactive, 45-minute presentation at your business, community agency, or faith-based group, call (845) 364-2500.
