Fight the Triple Threat - Get Vaccinated!
Protect Yourself from the Flu, COVID-19, and RSV
NEW CITY, NY, - During National Influenza (Flu) Vaccination Week, December 6th-12th, the Rockland County Department of Health reminds residents to get vaccinated against the Flu and other upper respiratory illnesses such as COVID-19 and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV).
“Getting your annual vaccinations can reduce the risk of illness, hospitalization, or death. Young children, pregnant people, adults 65 or older, and those with certain chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes, or heart and lung disease have an increased risk of developing severe virus-related complications. It is important that individuals in these groups get vaccinated,” said Dr. Mary Leahy, Rockland County Commissioner of Health.
It typically takes a few weeks (usually around two) after vaccination for your body to build sufficient immunity (infection-fighting cells) and reach full protection against Flu, COVID-19, and RSV but it’s not too late to stay safe and healthy for upcoming holiday gatherings.
RSV is a common respiratory virus that usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms but can be severe, especially in infants and older adults. Once vaccinated, you can enjoy the holiday season knowing you’ve taken an important step to protect yourself and your loved ones from respiratory illnesses.
The Flu, COVID-19, and RSV vaccines are available at many pharmacies, or you can check with your healthcare provider.
In addition to getting vaccinated, follow these good health habits to help prevent getting and spreading diseases: avoid close contact with people who are sick, stay home when you are sick, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing, wash your hands often, and avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. It is also recommended to practice other good health habits, such as getting enough sleep, staying physically active, managing your stress, drinking plenty of fluids, and eating nutritious food. Wearing a mask is another prevention strategy that you can choose to further protect yourself and others. When worn by a person with an infection, masks reduce the spread of the virus to others.
