County Health Department Warns of Potential Measles Exposures in Rockland

Possible Measles Exposures Occurred Nov. 17th & 18th in Monsey, Spring Valley (See Below)

Pomona, NY - The Rockland County Department of Health (RCDOH) is notifying the public of possible measles exposures that happened on November 17th and 18th within Rockland at the following locations:

  • Amazing Savings
    59 NY-59, Monsey, NY
    Monday, November 17 from 4:00 to 10:00 p.m.
  • Target
50 Spring Valley Market Place, Spring Valley, NY
Tuesday, November 18 from 2:00 to 9:00 pm

If you were at any of the above locations during these dates, especially if you are in any of the following high-risk groups, contact your health care provider by phone right away (call before going for care):

  • Pregnant
  • A child under 6 months of age
  • Immunocompromised or immunosuppressed (when your body can’t fight disease)
  • Have not been vaccinated against the measles

Measles is one of the most contagious viruses on earth; 90% of unvaccinated people exposed to the virus become infected. You can catch measles just by being in a room where a person with measles has been, for up to 2 hours after that person is gone and prior to an infected person even having a measles rash.

Symptoms usually appear 10-12 days after exposure, but may appear as early as seven days, and as late as 21 days after exposure. Severe illness and complications like pneumonia, encephalitis, and death can occur in unvaccinated people.

To prevent the spread of illness, the Department is advising individuals who have symptoms consistent with measles to contact their health care provider, a local clinic, or a local emergency department before going for care. This will help to protect others at these facilities from being exposed to illness.

Free measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccines will be offered to residents six months & older using the RCDOH Mobile Vaccination Van at the following times and dates:

Tuesday, December 2nd
10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Rockland Kosher Supermarket, 27 Orchard St., Monsey

In addition, MMR vaccines are available at local health care providers, such as Refuah Health or Sun River Health, or call the Rockland County Department of Health at 845-364-2497 or 845-364-2520.

For more information, visit the Rockland County Department of Health and the New York State Department of Health measles webpages. To get your vaccine, visit www.vaccine.gov.
