Chief Criminal Investigator (Office of the District Attorney)

PURSUANT TO SECTION 211 of the New York State Retirement and Social Security Law, The Rockland County Office of the District Attorney is conducting a recruitment effort for the position of Chief Criminal Investigator. We are canvassing to see if there are any interested non-retirees who would meet the minimum qualifications as outlined in the job description.

The duties and responsibilities of the Chief Criminal Investigator primarily involve the strategic development of policies and procedures regarding criminal investigations and prosecution initiatives. The work also involves the responsibility for the oversight of criminal investigations conducted by the Office of the District Attorney. An incumbent in this position plays an advisory role to the District Attorney and may act for and in the place of the District Attorney with respect to the planning and execution of criminal investigations. Minimum Qualifications:
The Rockland County District Attorney seeks a Chief Criminal Investigator who shall have the following minimum qualifications:

  • At least fifteen (15) years of diversified and/or specialized law enforcement experience that includes a minimum of ten (10) years in an investigative capacity and/or in a supervisory capacity within a law enforcement or military agency.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of techniques and procedures used in conducting criminal investigations, including electronic surveillance, search warrants, interviewing, arrests, and seizures.
  • Thorough knowledge of laws governing arrests, rules of evidence and court proceedings, including experience appearing and providing testimony during criminal legal proceedings.
  • The required experience must have included all of the following:
    • A minimum of ten (10) years experience reviewing reports submitted by law enforcement subordinates for content, accuracy, detail, required follow-up investigations, and conformance to department policies.
    • The aspirant must demonstrate that they have handled investigations that were highly confidential in nature that involved public corruption in governmental agencies, police and law enforcement agencies, politicians, or elected officials.
    • The candidate must also demonstrate that the have experience in confidential internal affairs investigations.
    • The aspirant should have experience, awareness and knowledge of the communities and diverse cultures in Rockland County.
    • Demonstrated experience serving in a managerial capacity, including, but not limited to the oversight of subordinates, including hiring, discipline and training.

Other Requirements and Information:

  • Must be able to express ideas, policies, procedures, and directives effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Must have excellent computer, e-mail and Internet skills.
  • Must pass a police background investigation, including a drug screen.
  • Must be certified by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) as a police officer and must qualify with a department issued weapon.
  • Currently possess a valid New York State Driver’s license with no restrictions.
  • A competitive civil service examination is not required for this position in the Exempt classification. The position serves at the pleasure of the Rockland County District Attorney, and the appointment may be rescinded, at will, by the District Attorney.

  • Salary range is $180,123-$224.581 (subject to change)
